Research shows that the fastest way to eradicate poverty in this country is through education: if one person from a low-income family completes a college degree, the family trajectory will be positively impacted; however, there are many barriers to attaining a degree after high school: academic preparation and rigor at ones school, cultural understanding and value of higher education, affordability, to name a few.
Six out seven jobs (that yield a reasonable standard of living) by 2018 will require some form of education after a high school diploma in Ohio, yet just about four out of seven of those graduating from high school actually go on to college (and in Ohio, less than 8 out of 10 graduate high school). Once there (at college), 16% who started (whether two year or four year schools) will finish on time (in two or four years). After double the allotted time (four years or eight years), 40% will finally finish a degree.
