The Ironton College Access Program (originally named It Might As Well Be You) was started in January of 2001 by the Ironton Access Committee in Lawrence County.
The immediate goal of the Ironton College Access Program is to provide last dollar grant assistance to qualified students who have a financial need. Long-term goals include the establishment of programs and services to motivate and encourage elementary, middle, and high school students to stay in school and plan to pursue college, and make them and their parents aware of the benefits of a postsecondary education. Financial aid scholarships will be available for graduating seniors and their parents through the Ironton College Access Program.
The mission of the program is to increase the number of Ironton City School graduates who go on to receive a postsecondary education. Ironton, which is one of Ohio's Appalachian communities, has a population whose education levels are lower that the state participation rate of 65%. Ohio's Appalachian counties have a rate of 43%. Specific services include college advising and an early awareness program.
