The Mahoning Valley College Access Program, Inc. (MVCAP) was conceived in December of 2000 when a group of community leaders was convened by the Raymond John Wean Foundation to learn about the need in the Mahoning Valley to increase the college going rate of its students and the success of college access programs in other communities.
The MVCAP’s mission is to increase the number of students in Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties who continue their education beyond high school. The program hopes to overcome some of the obstacles Mahoning Valley students face in seeking higher education.
To begin to overcome these obstacles, the Mahoning Valley College Access Program, Inc. provides resource centers, last dollar scholarships, financial aid advisors, and early awareness services.
Goals of the access program include:
- Providing students and family with information about opportunities and resources for postsecondary education
- Providing advisory and educational programs that promote college as necessary and obtainable for all students
- Offering last dollar scholarships
- Promoting program activities
- Evaluating the program regularly to measure effectiveness.
The MVCAP awarded its initial last-dollar scholarships in July 2002. To date, 110 seniors have been presented with scholarships—most of $1,000--to reduce their unmet need.
