About
Since 2008, OCAN has sought to provide educational internship experiences for students; in return, OCAN has benefited from and come to understand the value of the work and ideas that our young people can bring to the table. In many cases, as we identify commitment and dedication, we entrust our interns with greater responsibility they continually rise to the occasion.
We’re proud to know that in one way or another, OCAN was a stop along these young people’s path to the workforce. Former OCAN interns are professionals in fields employing the skills they utilized here at OCAN, including program management, communications and public affairs/public relations; positions held by former OCAN interns include Program Coordinator, New Student Programs at Florida Gulf Coast University, Assistant Marketing Manager, Food Products, Bob Evans Farms, Communications Associate, American Red Cross, Judicial Extern, US Dicstrict Court, Northern District of Ohio.
Gain real world experience in the public sector at OCAN, a statewide organization interested in access to education for Ohio students. Work in the Huntington Building – right across the street from the Ohio Statehouse, accessible by several bus lines from campus, and experience the culture of Columbus’s downtown, a cross-section of business, politics, arts, and new development.

Media and Communications – Have a knack for getting to the bottom of an issue and telling a good story? Giving credit where credit’s due? Shedding light on issues to invoke action or a response? An interest in keeping others involved through regular and relevant communications through various – or whatever necessary – channels?
Gain real-world experience in the public sector, become involved with current issues related to access to education around the state of Ohio, and exercise your communications and PR skills through OCAN’s Media and Communications internship for course credit (English 689, Communications 683, Public Affairs 589, others as approved by an academic advisor). Events and Operations – Do you enjoy making the arrangements for your friends’ night out? Are you organized to the ‘t’ and enjoy being to go-to person to make sure all “the ducks in a row” that will bring an event or project to fruition?
OCAN’s Events and Operations position is for those who have a knack and an interest in being the resident “go-to person,” a quick-thinking, problem-solver who knows where the pieces are and how to get things done in an office setting. Learn what it takes to manage an office and large-scale events in the public sector, and earn course credit while you’re at it: Hospitality Management 571, Public Affairs 589, others as approved by an academic advisor. Social Entrepreneurship: OCAN’s WEST – The impacts of non-profits are tied to the revenue they’re able to procure. Innovative non-profits seek to gain independence and secure sustainability by generating revenue through creative, pointed, and relevant services or products.
WEST, an online database built to track the impacts of local OCAN member organizations, is an integral piece in balancing the sustainability equation for both OCAN the organization, and the Network at large, providing both the data to support wise investments in non-profit programming, and the revenue to support OCAN as an intermediary organization providing financial, training and professional development support for OCAN member programs.

Programming – Are you dedicated to a cause, and one who will take on all the pieces and parts to see fruition? Are you interested in learning about program management – from the micro to the macro?
As a statewide coordinating body, OCAN administers programming that is available statewide. The AmeriCorps program necessitates constant interfacing with State and National community service commissions, as well as multiple partners and participants throughout the state of Ohio, all while keeping the cause – ensuring access to education – at the forefront of every action and endeavor. Interface with contacts statewide and nationally, learn about non-profit funding and grant-writing, working with federal funding and AmeriCorps, and about taking care of details that make a program successful.
