There’s not a shortage in Ohio of
organizations dedicated to providing training and professional development
opportunities for educators, counselors, advisors and other practitioners
looking to learn how to better position students for success post high
school. Established expressly to provide
expertise, support, and training on various topics related to college
admissions, financial aid, and other college access and advising strategies to
Ohio’s educational practitioners, the Ohio Association for College Admission
Counseling (OACAC), the Ohio Association of Financial Aid Administrators
(OAFSAA), the Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA) and the Ohio College
Access Network (OCAN) have been dedicated to providing such outreach for years.
Now for the first time, through Federal College Access Challenge Grant funds, the
opportunities of the collective organizations will be coordinated and expanded
under a statewide initiative to provide more numerous, and more readily
available high quality college access training opportunities specifically for
school counselors. The partnering organizations were awarded $150,000 in order
to remove barriers to high quality training and professional development
opportunities for counselors, especially new counselors and those serving high
need school districts. Expanded outreach and opportunities include scholarships
for trainings, professional development events and conferences; transportation
to and from trainings and other events; not only more trainings but more local
and regional training and professional development events; and finally online
trainings and resources throughout the year. It’s our goal that no matter your
location, limitations, interests, or goals, there will be an event to fit your
needs!
