Statewide College Access Training Initiative

2011-2012 School Year to Provide Plenty of Training and PD Opportunities for Counselors through Statewide Partnership Among OACAC, OASFAA, OSCA, OCAN

There’s not a shortage in Ohio of organizations dedicated to providing training and professional development opportunities for educators, counselors, advisors and other practitioners looking to learn how to better position students for success post high school. Established expressly to provide expertise, support, and training on various topics related to college admissions, financial aid, and other college access and advising strategies to Ohio’s educational practitioners, the Ohio Association for College Admission Counseling (OACAC), the Ohio Association of Financial Aid Administrators (OAFSAA), the Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA) and the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN) have been dedicated to providing such outreach for years.

Now for the first time, through Federal College Access Challenge Grant funds, the opportunities of the collective organizations will be coordinated and expanded under a statewide initiative to provide more numerous, and more readily available high quality college access training opportunities specifically for school counselors. The partnering organizations were awarded $150,000 in order to remove barriers to high quality training and professional development opportunities for counselors, especially new counselors and those serving high need school districts. Expanded outreach and opportunities include scholarships for trainings, professional development events and conferences; transportation to and from trainings and other events; not only more trainings but more local and regional training and professional development events; and finally online trainings and resources throughout the year. It’s our goal that no matter your location, limitations, interests, or goals, there will be an event to fit your needs!

Meet your Training Liaison

A coordinated and comprehensive training and professional development schedule between four professional and busy organizations that can fit the needs of professional and busy school counselors is nearly impossible without the dedication of a Liaison to ensure that not only topics, but regions, are amply covered with college access training. So collectively, we hired Mrs. Linda Knicely, who conveniently for all of us, just retired from her 27 year tenure as a school counselor with Canal Winchester Schools. In addition to 30 years of experience as an educator and school counselor, Linda also brings expertise in college admissions counseling, service learning and experiential education. Linda has enjoyed a distinguished career defined by involvement and leadership in the community, as well as state and national professional organizations and associations. To name a few, Linda is a certified trainer for Midwest Region of the College Board (Office for School Counselor Advocacy), a member of the Ohio ACT State Organization Council, and on Executive Board of OCAC (through whom most recently she was awarded the Life Member Award). Needless to say, we’re fortunate to have secured Linda. We are excited to introduce her as the Training Liaison for the first ever coordinated Statewide College Access Training initiative for school counselors.

Chances are, you might have met Linda already – she kicked off the year by heading up to Baldwin Wallace to join OACAC’s Summer Institute. In September, she’ll be joining the OACAC Articulation Workshops – keep your eye out for the opportunity in your area. Watch your email and check OCAN’s calendar regularly – Linda will be updating it with the training and professional development offerings of each of the Partner associations. For more information or to join the email list, reach out to Linda at knicelyl@ohiocan.org.
